Carpet Types

Carpet Fibres

Knowledge of the different fibres available is an important step in choosing the right carpet for your home. Fibre defines how a carpet looks, feels and performs. There are three fibre types generally available: luxurious wool, or the hard wearing synthetics and blends of the two.

Wool Carpets

Wool is the traditional carpet fibre and remains the benchmark against which all other fibres are measured. Wool’s outstanding characteristics provide an sophisticated look and a wonderfully soft fee underfoot . Wool is said to ‘age gracefully’ and continues to offer a warm and inviting environment for many years. The completely natural fibre is the environmentally friendly choice and improves air quality in your home.  However it isn't the most hard wearing carpet fibre on its own, so wool is often blended with a synthetic fibre like polyamide or polyester to give added strength providing you with a luxury carpet fit for any home.

Synthetic Carpets

Offer durability, retaining both looks and style much longer than other fibre carpets. Synthetic fibres are also one of the most versatile carpet types, since carpets manufactured from this can be dyed or printed after tufting. Synthetic carpets will never wear out they will just wear.  Synthetics are frequently used in blends with wool carpet due to its high performance. Premium synthetic fibres offer excellent abrasion resistance, colourfastness, anti-staining and anti-soiling properties. See our range of Synthetic carpets

Blended Carpets

Wool is often blended with a synthetic fibre like polyamide or polyester to give added strength to a carpet. This is usually a blend of 80% wool, 20% man made fibres. The results produce a luxury carpet fit for any home decorating.

Carpet Styles

The two in trend styles of carpet currently in demand are:

Loop Pile

All carpet begins as loop pile. Those carpets that remain uncut are called loop carpets (often referred to as Berber). Loop pile carpets are extremely durable, practical and fantastic for all purpose use. Within the loop carpet family, there are several combinations: level loop, cut and loop, and multi-level loop (textured). Level loop is all one height, Cut and loop is a combination of the two tuft styles, which adds a chiseled look to the carpeting. Multi-level loop carpet is similar in that it has high and low patterns flowing throughout the carpet. View our complete range of Loop Pile carpets

Twist Pile

Twisted pile carpet is essentially created from yarn which has been twisted tightly together. The loops are then cut to give its textured appearance. Twisted pile carpets are the most popular kind of carpet currently being produced. This style of carpet comes in plain colours, as well as 'heather' look which is made by combining yarns of complimentary shades together in the process of twisting - these are superb for disguising heavy wear or marks or stains. Twists are ideal for any room in the home particularly given the current trend in New Zealand for a seamless look featuring the same carpet throughout the house.   Twists come in the widest variety of colours, shades and prices.
