How to Measure a Room for a Carpet When you measure your room for a carpet you must measure at the widest width and the longest length to get the square measure. Remember, it is always advisable to have too much carpet than too little. Ensure that you measure into all the alcoves or window areas. When measuring into a door, measure from the opposite skirting board to where the carpet will finish underneath the door. Add on 10cm to each measurement. This additional 10cm allows for cutting and trimming and will allow for the best possible fit. The Square Metre versus the Linear Metre debate:Most carpet companies advertise their carpet prices per square metre however when it comes to paying for your carpet it always seems more than what you bargained for when basing the price on the square metre cost. There is a simple reason for this. Carpets are sold in rolls of a standard width of 3.66 metres (a minority may be 4 metres). This is called a broad loom metre, or may be called a lineal metre. One lineal metre is a section of carpet 1 metre in length x 3.66 metres across. A square metre is 1 metre wide x 1 metre long. Although prices are quoted in square metres carpet has to be purchased in lineal metres, simply because it’s made so wide! A number of crucial variables also have to be taken into consideration when measuring for a carpet such as where joins should and should not be; the direction of carpet pile should be running in the same direction throughout the home (a change of direction can lead to a slight change of colour in the carpet); Carpet pile running DOWN the stairs not across for optimum wear.
